The Edifier TWS5 true wireless earbuds offer a listening experience featuring aptX and Bluetooth 5.0, IPX5 water resistance and up to 32 hours of listening before the charging case needs to be charged up again.
The earbuds come in with a glossy black design, with matte grey outer sides, which are home to the touch buttons. Glossy earbuds can be prone to scratches and being covered in fingerprints, so I am pleased to see that Edifier has added a matte finish to the area of the earbuds which will be touched regularly throughout day to day use – this will help the earbuds age more graciously.
The TWS5 do have a larger design, this can be seen in comparison to Edifier’s TWS1 earbuds which are the smaller sibling to these. I didn’t find this to be too much of an issue for myself in regards to getting a secure fit, but if you have smaller ears this is something that you may want to be cautious of when making your purchase decision.
Despite the larger-sized design, the earbuds are comfortable to wear – even if they do stick out the ears a little. The underside of the earbuds is well shaped to fit the ear securely and comfortably, allowing the earbuds to be worn without having to worry about them slipping out or moving around.
The outer sides of the earbuds are home to the touch surface which can perform a couple of functions when listening. The touch button allows for track controls to be performed, as well as answering and hanging up phone calls. Unfortunately, there’s no support for volume controls or activating your mobile device’s smart assistant from the earbuds – these are functions that I would’ve liked to have seen on a pair of earbuds in this price bracket – the retail price is £79.
Also on the outer side, alongside the touch surface, which is indicated by the Edifier logo, is an LED status light which will tell you when the earbuds are connected to your device or charging up in the charging case.
Overall, I quite like the design of the TWS5. Albeit being a little large, the earbuds are comfortable to wear and I like the use of matte as well as glossy plastics which help break up the design. The construction feels well made and the plastic feels of good quality.
The charging case shares a similar design to the earbuds, it uses the speckled-matte grey finish throughout the entire case. The outer side of the case is home to three easy to see LED indicator lights.
The rear side is home to the charging port, which is, unfortunately, micro-USB – I really do think that earbuds should be using USB Type-C at this point, especially for a pair of earbuds with a £79 price tag – micro-USB just seems a bit outdated at this point.
The charging case itself is well built, with a strong and sturdy hinge design that will not accidentally close as you try to get the earbuds out of the case – this is great to see as it provides a good experience using the earbuds.
The Edifier TWS5 provide a fantastic listening experience, the bass, mid and treble frequencies work well with each other and do not overwhelm one another. Bass frequencies sound controlled yet still manage to pack a punch when needed with a good amount of and the mid and treble frequencies such as percussion and vocals have good clarity.
These sound characteristics are my preferred type, so I am incredibly pleased with how the earbuds sound and I have found the listening experience to be very pleasant throughout a range of different musical genres.
The passive sound isolation offered by the rubber ear tips is good and there are three sizes of ear tips included in the box. The volume offered by the earbuds is good, I found myself listening to music at just over 50% which provided me with a comfortable listening volume – I have no complaints.
The microphone on the TWS5 sounds clear and picked up my voice to a good and audible volume. This makes the earbuds good for making phone calls or creating voice memos. To cut out on background noise, the earbuds also feature cVc noise reduction to help your voice stand out clearly.
The earbuds feature Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity which will ensure that the earbuds support the latest Bluetooth technologies and provide a futureproofed experience with the latest smartphones and devices, this works alongside aptX to provide a higher quality audio stream to the earbuds. The earbuds also feature an IPX5 water resistance rating, making them perfect for exercise or wearing at the gym without worrying about breaking a sweat.
The earbuds can also work as a stereo pair or independently from one another but unfortunately, I was unable to seamlessly switch the earbuds in and out of the case without them disconnecting from my phone, unlike the TaoTronics SoundLiberty 79. The earbuds will automatically pair to your device when taken out of the case.
The Edifier TWS5 can provide up to 8 hours of listening on a single charge, with an additional 24 hours of listening time offered when the charging case is taken into account, giving you 3 additional charges before the case itself needs to be charged.
The Edifier TWS5 are a great option if you’re looking for a great sounding pair of true wireless earbuds for under £100. The design is a little bulkier than some other earbuds on the market and they do lack more modern features such as USB Type-C but the sound quality and listening experience offered is fantastic – if you’re worried about sound and nothing else, these are a fantastic choice.
